On Regional Conflict and Summer Suits

I try hard to be an American and to not be too opinionated when it comes to the affairs of foreign nations. But the actions of Israel and the Palestinians are likely to affect us - our standing in the world and our security. Sure, I have opinions. But opinions on Israel are like a certain part of the anatomy: everyone's got one, but you can get in trouble for exposing yours. But, lately I feel uninformed. Is it getting out of hand in Israel and Lebanon? Can foreign policy guys like Justin Logan and Leon Hadar or anyone else please start telling us something? I mean, we make a big commitment to Israel -- are we about to do something?

As readers, you know that underneath this sublimely fluffed silk pocket square beats the heart of a raging American populist. But occasionally even I get busted up and worried about the Middle East. The last time was the standoff in Bethlehem. Now, this:

President Ahmadinejad of Iran weighed in, warning Israel against taking the war to Hezbollah’s mentors in Syria. “If the Zionist regime commits another stupid move and attacks Syria, this will be considered like attacking the whole Islamic world and this regime will receive a very fierce response,” Mr Ahmadinejad was quoted as saying in a telephone conversation with President Assad of Syria. - Stephen Farrell

This doesn't sound good. Ahmadinejad, I thought we could hang out and discuss the nuances of summer suits. What's the world coming to? No seriously, can we get some expert opinions on what the hell the world is coming to?

I'm so old that I went to school with the children of the Shah's ministers. This was at an exclusive boarding school in the middle of the cow fields of Normandy. These kids had a ton of money and they loved French fashions. Happy in their liberation from traditional Iranian garb, the girls wore Chanel grey gabardine skirts and Jordan high heels across the fields to classes! That same year the Shah was deposed so it was back to burlap for the girls. It seems the guys are still able to indulge this compromise with the world. My sisters-in-law are fond of saying, in re the coming invasion by Islam, that they will defend their high heels to the death!

There is a fairly intelligent debate among paleconservatives and realists over at my blog on Israel, Lebanon, just war, the proper approach to terrorists, Iran, etc. I think you'll enjoy.

PS, Your quote in the anatomy is the stone cold nuts, as they say in Poker.
