Militarism in Japan. ScarJo in 8 MM

WW II Propoganda.

How dare Japan shrink from the possibility of nuclear annihilation! Well that is not exactly what George Will said. In fact, George Will is correct that some of the terms forced onto the Japanese after their defeat in World War II seem ridiculous.  Citing article 9 of the 1947 Constitution

Article 9. Aspiring sincerely to an international peace based on justice and order, the Japanese people forever renounce war as a sovereign right of the nation and the threat or use of force as means of settling international disputes.

Will is also correct that the Japanese should be allowed some form of patriotism and nationalism.

Many Japanese want their nation to rise from the post-1945 apologetic crouch that has made even patriotism problematic. - George Will

Of course one of the astonishing things about Japan is that it has lived in peace (admittedly under the protection of American power) since World War II. Whatever psychic damage was done to the Japanese after their defeat it will not simply be undone by the embrace of George Will's "normality." Upgrading Japan's defense forces into a regular army, above the objections of North Korea and China - no matter how prudent a move on Japan's part will place in the minds of the Japanese and its political class once again that their island nation is now a potential belligerent and that its continental rivals are threatening the world they've known for a few generations - that in fact Japan should "have an international stature and responsibilities commensurate with its economic prowess." Exactly what kind of responsibilities George Will talking about?

Anyway, obviously Japan has played an important role in the development of ScarJo's career. I am forbidden from admiring her.  But that is just fine. I can however admire the warm glow of the Bob Dylan Video in which she now stars. So here is our music video of the week at SwD, "When the Deal Goes Down"

HIROSHIMA—"When" was the first time in history that thousands of people were killed in an instant. "When" was 8:15 a.m., 61 summers ago. In the B-29 Enola Gay, the copilot, keeping a flight log, wrote: "There will be a short intermission while we bomb our target." Next, in a wild hand, he wrote "My God!"

"When the Deal Goes Down" reminds me of "Take it With Me" by Tom Waits just with more weighty religious overtones.

I am fond of lazy old age love songs.

"Phone's off the hook
No one knows where we are
It's a long time since I
Drank champagne
The ocean is blue
As blue as your eyes
I'm gonna take it with me
When I go

Old long since gone
Now way back when
We lived in Coney Island
Ain't no good thing
Ever dies
I'm gonna take it with me
When I go

Far far away a train
Whistle blows
Wherever you're goin
Wherever you've been
Waving good bye at the end
Of the day
You're up and you're over
And you're far away

Always for you, and
Forever yours
It felt just like the old days
We fell asleep on Beaula's porch
I'm gonna take it with me
When I go

All broken down by
The side of the road
I was never more alive or
Alone
I've worn the faces off
All the cards
I'm gonna take it with me
When I go

Children are playing
At the end of the day
Strangers are singing
On our lawn
It's got to be more
Than flesh and bone
All that you loved
Is all you own

In a land there's a town
And in that town there's
A house
And in that house
There's a woman
And in that woman
There's a heart I love
I'm gonna take it
With me when I go
I'm gonna take it
With me when I go"
