Liberaltarians: the Debate

"You might be a liberaltarian"
America's Future Foundation is hosting a debate about "liberalitarianism," the possibility of a liberal - libertarian alliance, this Thursday at the Heritage Foundation. Details here. On the stage will be all the principal combatants: Ramesh Ponnuru, Brink Lindsey, David Boaz and Jonathan Chait. I should be there, unless of course it snows - in which case I'll be behind the wheel cursing at Virginia drivers who can't hack it in the elements. I miss New York drivers.

My brief take on the controversy and some other links are here

From the AFF article: “The attempt in the 1950s and 1960s to reconcile the philosophical divide between traditionalists and libertarians-dubbed "fusionism" by National Review's Frank Meyer-was politically successful, culminating in the election of Ronald Reagan in 1980"

What’s a traditionalist?

Is it someone who advocates the liberal quasi libertarian principles on which the US was founded? Or is it someone who advocates the more recent invention of the American System as the Republicans do?

Or is it perhaps of a more religious nature? Such as Transcendentalism? and its progeny of manifest destiny, american hegemony and pox americana ?

Hm, Russell Kirk and Transcendentalism--I don't see that working out well.

Mr. Larison writes : "Hm, Russell Kirk and Transcendentalism--I don't see that working out well."

Nor does Kirk represent what is meant by conservative or traditionalist by those at the Heritage. The ghosts of Fr. Rueda and Paul Weyrich have long since left the building.

Good point. I have no idea what they think a traditionalist is at Heritage. I'm afraid I somehow missed the irony in your earlier comment--my apologies.

Jon Chait was the one who popularized the phrase "Bush Hatred" among media. Since then, whenever the Bushian blogs and punidts attack Bush haters, they always seem to allude to or point to anti war liberals. But Chait was an Iraq war supporter. So you see, our political dialogue is a closed shop, full of false and misleading chacterization among those who are supposed to know better. BTW - Michael, your Castaway piece was very well done. You're a terrific writer.

I can see few differences between socialists and libertarians except that the former occasionally dress better. (I mean of course the indies and yuppies as opposed to the hippies.) Not to say that they have what might objectively be termed "good" taste, but I have yet to encounter a libertarian who even had an inkling of aesthetic sense. Maybe they exist; I just haven't seen them. As for the LRC crowd, I must defer to what another, wiser fellow wrote once: "Paleolibertarians? Or Catholics in drag?"

Mr. Moses writes : "I have yet to encounter a libertarian who even had an inkling of aesthetic sense."

To the contrary, Miss Victoria who comments occasionally on this blog, is a libertarian with a gifted aesthetic sense. Although it's a gift best seen in action in person to be fully appreciated.
