Cashmere Calamity
![]()
Yeah, that's Cashmere.Christian Chensvold, who maintains the oft-quoted (here anyway) Dandyism.net has an article for the LA Times on the democratization of cashmere.
The democratization of dress has brought us to the point where blue jeans —originally a 19th century workers' garment—now can easily fetch $800, while cashmere—once considered exclusively upper crust—is available to the masses at Target for $27.99 for a sweater. Although some may argue that the smiling face of Tweety Bird on a $350 sweater perfectly illustrates the difference between those with money and those with taste, cashmere is not likely to be disposed of prematurely. - Christian Chensvold
Some may remember my own experience about Denim - communism, and capitalism in my essay Dinner at Telluride.
Chensvold holds his cards close to his chest. He can sometimes be seen as moaning about the decline of excellence and has even lamented English self-loathing. The idea of a thorough going anti-modernism is probably repulsive to a dandy. But one wonders whether dandies (of all sorts) were not in some ways a product of that long chemical reaction that comes from mixing state capitalism with the cultural forms we inherited from an aristocratic past.
