Never ask a woman to return something she stole from you. Even if it cost you two days salary and was hand stitched by an Englishman who knows your first name.

I will second that: the English ex-boyfriend of a young lady I know asked her for his shirt back after their relationship ended. He subsequently suffered the double humiliation of 1. her refusal to post an ordinary garment overseas, and 2. me inheriting the shirt.

What!? She steals it, then gets to keep it? No, no, no. And who should be embarrassed? The thief, or the one trying to get their property back?

I actually asked a Catholic priest (himself an English expat) if it was moral to keep it. His reaction was, "Of course. Ten pounds to ship a shirt? That's ridiculous!" In any case he left it at her house, along with some things that she had bought for him.

Perhaps I shouldn't have told this story. For what it's worth, though, I've yet to wear the thing.

By the way, the shirt was NOT hand-stitched. It wasn't fitted, nor a particularly good mark.
